About

Emma Slater

Thank you for taking the time to explore Wholeminds and consider whether I may be the right psychologist to support you on your journey toward psychological wellbeing.

I have worked across the health sector for over 20 years, with a background spanning both physical and mental health. I began my career with a Bachelor of Nursing, spending 15 years as a Registered Nurse in operating theatres across public and private hospitals in Brisbane, including The Wesley Hospital, The Prince Charles Hospital, and St Andrew’s Hospital. This experience laid a strong foundation for my ongoing interest in the connection between the body, nervous system, and psychological health.

After relocating to Bundaberg and starting a family, I retrained in psychology and have been working as a registered psychologist for the past seven years. My work is grounded in a trauma-informed understanding of mental health, informed by contemporary research and clinical practice.

My therapeutic approach is trauma-informed and integrative, influenced by the work of Bessel van der Kolk and Gabor Maté. Their writing, including The Body Keeps the Score and The Myth of Normal, has shaped my understanding of trauma as an adaptive response to overwhelming experiences, chronic stress, and early relational environments, rather than as a sign of personal failure or pathology.

I work with teens (15yrs +) and adults who have experienced psychological trauma, complex trauma, developmental trauma, and nervous system dysregulation, as well as those struggling with anxiety, emotional overwhelm, relationship difficulties, and long-standing patterns of self-criticism or people-pleasing.

In my clinical work, I draw on Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), Schema Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

These evidence-based approaches allow therapy to be tailored to each individual’s history, needs, and pace, supporting change that feels safe, grounded, and sustainable.

Deepak Chopra:

'Every cell in your body is eavesdropping on your thoughts'

As a wife, mum of four and owner of WholeMinds I work Monday - Friday during school hours. My work hours are deliberately designed to accommodate the delicate balance between work and my family which I acknowledge won't work for some clients.

When I'm not in the office I'm likely being an Uber to my children ferrying them between school and sporting commitments, attending Pilates for my own physical and psychological health, or working at home on our farm (being outdoors is my best). Learning is also a passion and each year I regularly attend trauma conferences and professional development opportunities nationally.

I also love music and explore all genres, I am known to annoy my family by selecting playlists dependent on what I'm cooking...you should try it!
